Chapter Fifteen

The next morning, I promised myself I’d do normal single-girl-on-vacation things while snooping around for the Bronsons’ whereabouts the night Dale was killed. Since I had no hot trails and no real ideas to speak of, I decided to use the old standby for getting the creative juices flowing—I went to the bar.

Vienna was already at the pool when I arrived. I got there early to get a seat at the swim-up bar before the late morning cocktail rush. So far it was still empty, just a couple people seated around and the bartender emptying a bag of ice into the ice machine, which had an Out of Order sign taped to the front. Vienna joined me in the pool, where we climbed onto two seats next to a very sunburned man.

It was Sean.

“Hi Sean,” I said as I grabbed the cocktail menu. “We met the other day. I’m Tessa,” I reminded him. Whether he remembered me or not didn’t much matter. But it was weird knowing so much about his life—namely that his wife was hiding a mountain of credit card debt from him—when he probably didn't know my name.

“Hey,” he replied, dragging his attention from the television after a beat.

“Sean got married this week,” I said to Vienna, as though she didn't already know. “His whole family is here to celebrate.”

“You mean my in-laws,” Sean corrected. “My family had to miss the blessed occasion.”

Vienna and I exchanged a meaningful glance. Whose own family doesn't come to their wedding?

“At least it’s nice you get to celebrate with your in-laws?” I asked.

“No one chooses an extended vacation with the in-laws,” Vienna said. “Trust me.”

“Too true.” Sean raised his beer in acknowledgment. “Next up on the Bronson family vacation—a half-day sightseeing sailing excursion.”

“That sounds like fun!” I said.

Sean flashed me a look that indicated I was mistaken. “Yes, after the wedding and the extended schedule of post-wedding festivities, now we get the pleasure of beginning the Family Vacation segment of the trip,” he said.

“Was that your wedding on the beach the other night?” A woman seated on Sean’s other side interrupted. Sean affirmed that it was.

“It was so gorgeous!” the woman exclaimed. “I’m getting married, too! This weekend!” She thrust her left hand toward us, waggling her fingers. Unfiltered sunlight caught the facets of a diamond, a small one surrounded by a halo of even tinier diamonds. “Soon I'll be Mrs. Savannah White. My future husband says I should change my whole name to Vanna White.”

No, girl, you shouldn't.

Sean seemed as though he couldn’t care less about the woman’s engagement ring or what her name would be after marriage, but Vienna and I congratulated her and paid the ring obligatory compliments.

“I saw you all at the luau the other night!” Savannah went on, oblivious to Sean’s disinterest. “Do you know where your wife found that dress she was wearing? Was it here on the island? I’ve been looking for something exactly like it for our post-wedding brunch.”

It was apparent that Sean had no idea where his wife bought her clothes and didn’t much care.
